Use a dim room and moderate monitor brightness. Phone-camera exposure often makes normal IPS glow look worse than it appears to your eyes.
What this tool measures
A uniform dark image makes bright patches near panel edges easier to see. Inspect from your normal viewing position in a dim room.
How to use it
- Dim the room and let your eyes adapt.
- Open the black pattern in full screen.
- Cycle through dark gray and white to distinguish bleed, glow, and uniformity issues.
When to check for backlight bleed
- Inspect a newly delivered monitor
- Record panel behavior within the return period
- Compare uniformity at different brightness and room-light levels
Backlight bleed, IPS glow, and bad pixels
Backlight bleed is usually a fixed bright patch near an edge or corner; IPS glow changes with angle and distance; a bad pixel is a tiny fixed point.
Repeat the test
Use several runs under the same conditions before drawing a conclusion from a single value.
Compare like with like
Keep the browser, window size, device connection, and power mode consistent when comparing results.
Change your viewing angle
If the bright area changes markedly as you move, it is more likely IPS glow. A fixed edge patch is more consistent with backlight bleed.
Do not judge from a phone photo alone
Night mode and automatic exposure exaggerate dark scenes. Base the final judgment on normal viewing distance and everyday brightness.
Measurement limits
IPS glow changes with viewing angle, while persistent edge-shaped bright areas are more consistent with backlight bleed. A camera can exaggerate both.

Set up an accurate backlight bleed test
Keep the page active
Background-tab throttling, browser extensions, and other busy applications can affect browser measurements.
Retest under controlled conditions
Reload the page, keep the same settings, and repeat the measurement before treating an outlier as a fault.
Do not maximize brightness
Start at your normal brightness and reduce room light moderately; extreme settings can exaggerate normal panel behavior.
Do not press the panel
Pressure can temporarily change liquid-crystal alignment and may cause permanent damage.
Backlight bleed questions
Is this a hardware certification test?
No. It is a browser-side diagnostic intended for comparison and troubleshooting, not laboratory certification.
Where is the test data processed?
The measurement is calculated in this browser tab and the tool does not upload the raw test input.
Does OLED need a backlight bleed test?
OLED has no conventional backlight, so it does not show the same defect, though dark-gray patterns can still reveal uniformity issues.
How much backlight bleed is too much?
A webpage cannot set a universal threshold. Judge whether it is distracting in normal content, at normal brightness and viewing distance.
