Actual camera stream settings
Webcam Resolution Test
Check the resolution and frame rate your webcam actually delivers to the browser at several requested quality levels.
Webcam Resolution Test
Camera stream
What this tool measures
A browser requests a target resolution, but the camera and driver choose the actual stream settings. This tool reports those negotiated settings.
How to use it
- Allow camera access.
- Choose a requested quality level.
- Compare requested and actual width, height, aspect ratio, and frame rate.
When to test webcam resolution
- Confirm whether a 1080p or 4K webcam reaches its advertised mode
- Compare 30 FPS and 60 FPS combinations
- Investigate soft video or low frame rate in meeting software
Requested settings versus actual webcam output
The browser sends preferred constraints to the driver, but the webcam returns a combination it supports and can currently deliver.
Repeat the test
Use several runs under the same conditions before drawing a conclusion from a single value.
Compare like with like
Keep the browser, window size, device connection, and power mode consistent when comparing results.
Use the actual track settings
The active width, height, and frame rate describe this browser session more accurately than the requested values or product marketing.
Low light can reduce frame rate
A webcam may lengthen exposure time in a dark room and lower its delivered frame rate.
Measurement limits
Another app, low light, USB bandwidth, driver limits, or browser policies can reduce resolution or frame rate.
Privacy
Camera video stays in this browser tab and is not uploaded by the tool.
When the webcam will not open or reports a lower mode
Keep the page active
Background-tab throttling, browser extensions, and other busy applications can affect browser measurements.
Retest under controlled conditions
Reload the page, keep the same settings, and repeat the measurement before treating an outlier as a fault.
Close applications using the camera
Meeting, streaming, or camera applications may hold the device. Close them before requesting access again.
Check USB bandwidth and drivers
Use a suitable high-speed USB port, avoid slow hubs, and verify the webcam driver and firmware.
Webcam resolution questions
Is this a hardware certification test?
No. It is a browser-side diagnostic intended for comparison and troubleshooting, not laboratory certification.
Where is the test data processed?
The measurement is calculated in this browser tab and the tool does not upload the raw test input.
Is the camera video uploaded?
No. The preview and track settings stay in the current browser tab and the tool does not upload the video.
Why does a 4K webcam report only 1080p?
The browser, USB bandwidth, driver, selected frame rate, or webcam may not accept the requested combination.
